Join people all over the world this Thursday, October 8th to participate in the Read for the Record in an effort to promote childhood literacy! The mission of Read for the Record, which was started by Jumpstart in 2006, is to get children across the globe to read the same book, on the same day, in communities all over the world.
The book this year is (one of my personal favorites) The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
The Early Literacy Program, a supported partner of the Children and Families Commission of Orange County, is supporting the efforts of Jumpstart locally to reach as many children and families in Orange County. The mission of the Early Literacy Program is to ensure that all children are healthy and ready to learn when they enter school by encouraging families and caretakers of young children to “Read Early. Read Aloud.”
How can you get involved you ask? Let me tell It’s easy and fun!
* Be counted: Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to any little ones you know. To make sure you are counted, pledge to read today! Click HERE to sign up to be counted!
* Buy your book: Visit a bookstore near you or go to www.readfortherecord.org to buy a limited edition of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. You can also print these coupons and visit Barnes & Noble stores to get special discounts and support ELP.

The first 100 families to sign up for Westfield’s WFamily program at the Westfield Main Place Mall will receive a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Volunteers will be reading to children, giving away books, and sharing literacy tips with families.

At Pretend City, readings of The Very Hungry Caterpillar will take place throughout the day with special prizes and activities for kids. Families who bring gently-used books for the Early Literacy Program will be entered to win a $100 Pretend City store gift certificate. Books collected will be given to the Early Literacy Program and distributed to deserving children and families throughout Orange County. My favorite book when I was a child was “The Moster At the End Of this Book” Groover was always funny and I loved every page and turning it to the next. Now I have a two year old and I love reading to her, She gets so excited when she know what is coming next in the story. We love “Brown Bear Brown Bear” Somehow these stories never get old.
My favorite childhood book was Amelia Badelia. I loved reading all of the Amelia Badelia books and having them read to me!
I like reading books by Jane Cabrera, Mommy Mommy Carry Me Please is a good one!

We love the “snappy” pop up book series. They are great with rhyming and learning different concepts (ie colors, opposites, numbers, etc). We also love so many others, but these seem to have been a great hit for a long time throughout different ages.
