This picture wasn’t from the beach.
It was from a dirty hole underneath the swings at our neighborhood park yesterday, the product of the prior day’s rain.
It was really gross. Everything in me wanted to say to the kids, “Ewwww! Don’t play in that dirty standing water!” And I heard other moms use just about those same words. But Michele’s post, “Ask Yourself: Why Not?” from Fun Orange County Parks flashed in my mind. I loved that post. So I lightened up and let them go at it.
Did she step in the puddle emerging her entire bedazzled Twinkle Toe? Yes.
Did she get sandy? Yes.
Did she pick up a random phone receiver toy that was emerged in the water (so random), attempt to answer it, and get mud on her face? Yes.
But the most important question was, did she have fun?
And the answer was an unequivocal, YES!
So, like Michele said, next time your practical side wants to jump in and everything in you wants to yell “NO!” Ask yourself, why not?

I love it! I had the same thought as my daughter ran through muddy puddles in her ballet clothes yesterday, but she was having so much fun. And how often do they get to do this in California? By summer they will be adding water trying to get their sand to stick together.
Cute! 🙂 We need a “like” button for your blog posts!
Too funny!!! Even I’m not that bold.
Laughing! All you need is a pair of Puddle Pants and you wont need to worry!
Just her play! So cute!
My daughters love running around and touching and holding EVERYTHING. Just last week I saw them rummaging through the used clothes on our laundry hamper (which included some used socks!) and I kinda freaked out.
The thought of having them play in the mud sends shivers down my OC spine, but you’re absolutely right though. Why not? Why not let them have fun and be kids? Isn’t that what being a kid is all about?
(Of course, this is all under the premise that I will be giving them a very long bath afterwards. :P)
